Nether portal calculator

Convert Overworld and Nether coordinates with the 1:8 ratio and check how your portals will link.

Y (unchanged) 64
Z 0

Use it to

  • Find where to build a linked Nether portal
  • Plan Nether highways between bases
  • Measure distance between two coordinates

How Nether portal linking works

  • 1:8 scale. One Nether block equals eight Overworld blocks on X and Z. Y is never scaled.
  • Search radius. Java 1.16.2+ searches 128 blocks (Overworld) or 16 blocks (Nether). Older Java and Bedrock search 128 in both.
  • Closest wins. The nearest portal in range is used, counting Y distance.
  • No portal in range. The game builds a new one near the converted coordinates.

Distance between two coordinates

Enter two Overworld points to measure the distance, in blocks.

Frequently asked questions

How do Nether coordinates work?

Horizontal Overworld coordinates are 8 times the matching Nether coordinates. Divide X and Z by 8 to convert Overworld to Nether, and multiply by 8 to convert back. Y is not scaled.

Why does my portal link to the wrong place?

The game links to the closest existing portal within range and includes Y in the distance, so nearby portals can share or steal a link. In Java Edition 1.16.2 and later the search radius is 128 blocks in the Overworld and 16 blocks in the Nether. Build the Nether-side portal within 16 Nether blocks of the converted coordinates.

Is the Y coordinate converted?

No. Y stays the same on both sides. Nether terrain runs from Y 0 to Y 127 with a bedrock ceiling at Y 127, and the game searches the full height of the destination dimension.

Does this work on Bedrock Edition?

The 1:8 horizontal ratio is the same. Bedrock Edition searches a 128-block radius in both dimensions, so linking is less precise than Java Edition 1.16.2 and later.
