How Minecraft username availability works

Minecraft usernames are unique across Mojang accounts and tied to a permanent UUID. Usernames can change, but a name must be available at the moment of the change. Display casing is kept, but lookups are case-insensitive.

When you search a name, this tool checks Mojang’s public profile system to find if the username belongs to an account.

If a profile exists, the name is taken. If no profile exists, the name may be available, subject to Mojang’s internal restrictions. Because usernames can change, availability can change over time.

Minecraft username rules

  • Length: 3 to 16 characters
  • Allowed characters: letters (A–Z, a–z), numbers (0–9) and underscore (_)
  • No spaces or special characters other than underscore
  • Usernames are unique across all accounts
  • Lookups are case-insensitive, but display casing is kept
  • Reserved or blocked names may not be available, even if they show as free

Frequently asked questions

Is this tool official?
No. This tool uses Mojang's public API to check Minecraft usernames but is not affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft.
Why might a name appear available but not be changeable?
Some names are reserved, blocked, or previously taken and removed. Mojang may restrict certain usernames. Additionally, caching delays can temporarily affect very recent changes.
Do you store the usernames I search?
Recent searches are stored only in your browser session to make repeat checks faster. We do not publish, share, or sell search data.
Can I check multiple Minecraft usernames at once?
Not currently. Usernames must be checked individually.
